Turmeric is a flowering plant, Curcuma longa of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, the roots of which are used in cooking.
The rhizome has an appearance similar to ginger, it is this root like stem that produces the yellow turmeric spice. It was around 500 BCE that turmeric emerged as an important part of Ayurvedic medicine.
Turmeric is routinely added to mustard blends and relishes. It also is used in place of saffron to provide color and flavor.
